Alvin Alexis Hawk, age 98, went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 30, 2023, after a brief illness. He was born on December 3, 1924, in Nicholsville, AL to Robbin and Laura Bates Hawk. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Edna Earle Matthews Hawk, as well as his brothers, James Hawk, Trevor Hawk and Coleman Hawk, his sister, Mary Frances Hawk, and his son, Timothy Hawk.
After graduating from Sweetwater High School, Alvin enlisted in the United States Navy. He served at Barin Field in Baldwin County, AL. Upon completing his service, he attended Livingston University and Marion Military Institute and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1948 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He then worked at Central Foundry in Tuscaloosa. During his time in Tuscaloosa, Alvin met his wife, and they were married on January 20, 1951, in Northport, AL. They later moved to Birmingham and he worked for Moore Handley in industrial sales, as well as Dyson Conveyor Maintenance and MH Precision.
Always a student of God’s Word, Alvin was an active member of Central Park Baptist Church for over 25 years, where he taught Sunday School and served as Chairman of the Deacons and Chairman of the Finance Committee. As a current member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church for over 40 years, he served as a Sunday School teacher and deacon and was later named deacon emeritus. In addition to spiritual pursuits, Alvin was an avid reader and interested in gardening, growing both vegetables and blooming plants.
He is survived by his beloved daughter, Patricia Hawk, of Vestavia Hills; several much-loved nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and also great great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 5, at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, preceded by visitation at 12:30. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shades Mountain Baptist Church, Love in Action (food pantry in Pelham), Big Oak Ranch or Doctors Without Borders.
