Mr. Kennard, son of Wendell W. Kennard and Mary Dimond Kennard, is survived by his two sisters, Beth Moore Fletcher and Karen Kennard Ingram, (Jonathon). He is also survived by his nephew, John Christopher Moore, and niece, Mary Moore Whistler, (Guy), and their children.
He graduated from Shades Valley High School and attended Samford University (then Howard College). Taking a break from college, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, was stationed in Germany, and honorably discharged in 1967 as Sergeant. He then returned to Samford University and completed his B.S. in Business Administration.
Inherently a salesman, Gary worked for several large corporations including Bausch & Lomb, Johnson Controls, American IOL International, and Schering-Plough, Inc. Deciding to change careers, he attended the Master of Arts in Counseling Program at UAB and became a Substance Abuse Counselor there in 2000.
Among his contributions to the community are Crisis Center Volunteer, Reserve Hoover Police Officer, member of Cahaba Valley Elks Lodge, Grief Therapy for children at Amelia Center, and bus driver in his retirement. His interests included golf, dancing, duplicate bridge, flying (private pilot's license), and he was a member of Riverchase Church of Christ.
The family will greet friends at a reception from 11 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to APDA (American Parkinson Disease Association) Center for Advanced Research, 1720 7th Avenue, South, Birmingham, Alabama, 35294.
