She was born on September 28, 1924 in Cleveland OH, the only daughter of Robert and Irene Zimmer Herman. She was raised in Parma, Ohio. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Harold R. Herman.
After graduating from Parma High School, she attended Case Western Reserve, earning her BS and Master’s degrees in Microbiology. Shortly afterward, she was awarded a Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin and went on to get her PhD. In Seattle, WA, “Yeast Genetics” was the focus of her post-doctoral research.
Alberta spent her career of 20 years as a scientist at the National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research “Ag Lab” in Peoria. She worked with scientists at the Ag Lab using various strains of yeast to increase yield of microbial fermentations. She retired in 1984.
Alberta was known for her generous nature. In 2016, she donated “Rook” created by famed artist, Nita Sunderland, to Peoria Riverfront Museum. She also received great personal joy in donating trees and flowers to beautify the grounds at Proctor Place. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, classical music, reading and fine arts. Alberta was a loving daughter, sister, colleague and friend and will be missed by many.
