Jacqueline O. VanNess
January 20, 1931 – February 8, 2019
Jacqueline O VanNess, 88, of Peoria, passed away at 8:56 pm Friday, February 8, 2019 at Unity Point Proctor Hospital. She was born January 20, 1931 in San Jose, IL the daughter of Lorn and Gertrude Reed Elliott. She married William G Lyman Jr. on May 9, 1953. He preceded her in death on October 13, 1990. She later married John VanNess on September 2, 1995. He preceded her in death on June 5, 2015. She was also preceded in death by her parents. Jacqueline is survived by her children, Becky (John) Marvin of South Bend, WA, Josie (Jack) Johnston of Grapevine, TX, and Lorn (Luanne) Lyman of Tulsa, OK; step children, John (Marcia) VanNess of Holland, MI, Janet VanNess, Edelstein, Jennifer VanNess, Rockford, Jeffrey VanNess, Edelstein, and Joel (Jayne) VanNess, Peoria; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Marvin, Ellie Marvin, Jessica Johnston, Meredith Patrick, Amanda Lyman, Jason Johnston, Veronica Winters, and Nicholas Lyman; five step-grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. After spending her early years in San Jose, she grew up in Peoria where she graduated from Manual Technical High School in 1949 and was a star performer in the band on the oboe. She eventually went to work at Commercial Bank before starting a family. Jackie was an active participant in all of her children's’ activities, which included room mother, den leader, and Girl Scout leader.
Jackie loved to travel to visit her family spread across the country. She also enjoyed cheering on her Chicago Cubs and was thrilled to watch them win the World Series in 2016. Her athletic prowess included bowling, tennis, and later in life, golf. Additionally, she was a skilled card player, especially Hearts, and an avid crafter.
Jackie was an active member in the University United Methodist Church serving in several offices, including Chairman of the Trustees and Treasurer. In later years she was an active participant in the remodel of Memorial Hall.
Jackie was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, February 23, 2019 at her church with Pastor Paul Arnold officiating. A private burial will take place in Green Hill Cemetery in San Jose, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to University United Methodist Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.
