Darrell was born to Kyle and Annie Woodland on August 15, 1929, in Paint Rock, Texas. He spent the bulk of his childhood and all of his adult years living and working in South Austin. Darrell became a barber at the age of 17 after attending the first barber class ever held at the new Austin’s Barber College. He began his barbering career working alongside three of his uncles in downtown Austin. After 5 years of working at that location, he began working at a shop on 1710 South Congress, which was eventually renamed “Darrell’s Barber Shop”. He quickly became a well-known and respected fixture in the community. He barbered in Austin for almost 60 years. Darrell loved to play guitar and sing old country songs like those of Ernest Tubbs and Hank Williams. He also enjoyed playing forty-two domino’s, fishing, hunting dove and deer, and dancing.
Darrell married Frieda Bertha Becker on January 14, 1950, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pflugerville, Texas. They were married for 73 years and had two children: Travis Wayne Woodland and Diane Marie Hobson.
Darrell is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Evelyn (Hugh-Lee) Smith, Lucille (Morris) Ward, and Berma (Willard) Wimberley, and an infant brother and sister.
He is survived by his wife, Frieda Woodland, son Travis (Deann) Woodland, daughter Diane (Scott) Hobson, two grandsons Trent and Troy (Holly) Woodland, and two great-granddaughters Rudi and Juli Woodland.
