Norman Edward Hayes, 94, died Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at his home in Austin, TX. He was born January 25, 1927 in Alpine, Alabama to the late Robert Marion Hayes and Lola Mae Mellon Hayes. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Shizuko Hayes; three brothers, W.M. Hayes, James “Jimmy” Hayes, and Millard Hayes; two sisters, Doris Smith and Marie Wood.

In 1945 he was drafted into the United States Army during World War II. In 1950, during the Korean War, he enlisted into the United States Air Force and continued his service till he retired as a Senior Master Sergeant in 1975. He received his Associates of Applied Science at Austin Community College in Austin, TX and ran his own successful HVAC business till he retired in 1997. That same year he began volunteering at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center with his friends from the Onion Creek Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed volunteering and continued to do so till 2019. Throughout his life he enjoyed fishing and bowling. He was a part of senior bowling leagues at Westgate Lanes and always enjoyed hanging out with his friends and improving his game.

He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Hayes, son-in-law Shawn Hayes and granddaughter Tara Hayes; three brothers, Tommy Hayes, Joe Hayes and Ross Hayes, all of Vincent, AL; one sister Helen Beane of Leeds, AL and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 6, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden Funeral Home on 6100 North Lamar Blvd. The memorial service will begin at 1:00 p.m. with burial to follow at the Cook-Walden/Memorial Hill Cemetery at 14501 North Interstate 35 in Pflugerville, TX.

MY FRIEND NORMAN AND I WERE I THE USAF TOGETHER,,,I KEPTHIS AC BUSINESS BOOKS AND PREPARED HIS INCOME TAXES FOR NEARLY 49 YEARS...HE INSTALLED AND SERVICED NUMEROUS AC SYSTEMS IN MY HOME AND RENT HOUSES...WE HAD MANY FINANCIAL DISCUSSIONS...I KNEW IF I EVER NEEDED HELP THAT HE WAS AT MY SIDE AND AVAILABLE...I HAVE LOST A DEAR FRIEND AND USAF COMPARDE... AT AGE 85 I WILL SOON JOIN HIM AND SUE.... ALTHOUGH TWO DAYS BEFOR HIS PASSING I ASKED HIM THAT IF HE WENT FIRST DO NOT BE TO ANXIOUS TO OPEN A HOLE AND PULL ME THROUGH,,,,, SUE IS HERE AND WAITING FOR YOUR EARTHLY RELEASE TO THIS END I KNOW HE AND SUE ARE TOGETHER ONCE AGAIN.....WHERE SUE CAN WAIT ON HIM...DEBORAH WAS A LATE IN LIFE MIRACLE THAT HE AND SUE WERE SO PROUD OF AND LOVED SO DEARLY....A WONDERFUL FATHER AND FRIEND TO ALL....THE LORD IS BLESSING HIM AND SUE NOW TOGETHER....LAVERD MY WIFE AND I ARE ALSO MISSINGHIM....GOD SPEED TO ALL.
