Tiny, as she was known to close friends and family members, was born in Mobile, Alabama, on August 11, 1936 to Howard and Mazie (Helton) O'Gwynn. She graduated from Murphy High School in 1953 and Providence School of Nursing in 1956. She married Joseph Oberkirch at Spring Hill's St. Joseph's Chapel on July 20, 1957. Marjorie was a registered nurse and licensed realtor throughout her career. Joe was a civil service employee and his career took them to New Orleans, LA, Titusville, FL, Huntsville, AL, and Long Beach, MS. They retired to Orange Beach, AL in 1993 and later returned to settle in Mobile where they were both active parishioners of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
Joe preceded Marjorie in death on October 2, 2013. Marjorie was also preceded in death by her sister, Jeanette Jackson, and her brother, Robert O'Gwynn, both of Mobile. Marjorie was mother to four children; Susan Smith (Bob, deceased) of Opelika, AL, Michael Oberkirch (Debrah) of Alexander City, AL, Mark Oberkirch (Michele) of Austin, TX, and Mary Davis (Brian) of Madison, AL. She was Grandma to Sara-Anne Oberkirch, Kate Oberkirch, Chloe Oberkirch, Chandler Davis and Cailen Davis. She is also survived by many loving in-laws, nieces and nephews.
A memorial mass will be held at 11am on May 28, 2020, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Mrs. Tonia Parker, Ms. Sherry Shaw, and Ms. Catherine Rivera for their professional and compassionate care of Marjorie during the last two years of her illness. We also wish to thank her hospice caregivers, Linda Buchanon and Joel Smith.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the UAB School of Medicine Alzheimer's Disease Center.
