Clayburn Jackson was born in Tatum, Oklahoma, December 25, 1938 to the parents of Clarence and Maudie Jackson. He graduated from Hobbs High School with many basketball honors. Upon coming to Phoenix, Arizona, Clayburn met the love of his life- Velma Jean Colbert. They became a couple and married one another in 1962. Drafted into the military, and upon serving his time, the couple decided to make their home in Phoenix, Arizona. They placed their membership at Roeser Road Church of Christ in 1969.
He told a story of not reenlisting in the Army and desperately needing to feed and take care of his family. He describes how he walked into Consolidated Freightways to apply for a job. He had never driven a big rig before. They told him to "show us what he can do." He would laugh telling this story. He and stated he said a prayer, got in the big rig and drove it while praying he wouldn’t tear anything up. God heard his prayers. Having passed the test, they hired him on the spot. They told him whether he could drive or not, due to affirmative action, they needed an African American on payroll. He knew then God had him covered.
He provided for his family and eventually purchased several dump trucks, a tractor, a trailer and established Jackson’s Hauling & Construction Clean Up. If you were willing to work hard he’d hire you, train you, including his sons and grandkids. He also got into real estate investing in homes and renting them out as well as provide homes to families and people in need.
Clayburn Sr. loved teaching not only the trade but the bible as well. Every weekend the Jackson's home was open to everyone whether it be basketball, football, as well as hosting interactive bible studies. Whenever asked, he eagerly stepped in to assist preaching all over the valley. He never missed an opportunity to share his love for Jesus and the Bible. Every Sunday, he would drive 62 miles to Florence, Arizona where he established his prison ministry. He taught many about the Church found in the bible the Church of Christ, bringing many souls to Christ. Clayburn promised his mother Maudie Jackson that he would become a minister one day, that promise lead true. He Ministered at Highway 80 Church of Christ in Big Springs, Texas where he served for 2.5 years until he fell ill and had to return to Phoenix. One of his most favorite hobbies included lake fishing with close buddies and family, and he also made a host of friends around the world via CB radio waves aka Sachmo or Jack Rabbit (roger) were his radio names.
