Robert “Bob” Joseph Hinke, age 81, passed away on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at his home in Phoenix, Arizona. He was born on May 6, 1937 to the late Theodore and Alvine Hinke in Chicago, Illinois. Following his mother’s death when he was 3 years old, his father married Genevieve and they raised him along with his step-brother Tom Hinke. He graduated from St. Willibrord Catholic High School in Chicago in 1954. Growing up, he worked as a pin setter in his family’s bowling alley and in a boat shop, both passions he pursued throughout his life. He joined the Naval Reserve, serving 6 months active duty. Bob then worked for Illinois Central Railroad as a transportation analyst and Armour-Dial/Greyhound doing rates and routes and later Arizona Public Service. His work inspired his lifelong interest in trains including building models, riding, and watching and sharing stories, especially with his grandchildren. Bob married Barbara Kasky in Chicago in 1956 and for 20 years together they raised 5 children, Karen Dunston, Sharon Dixon, Susan Slezak, Robert “Bob” Hinke and Marilyn Kautz. He is survived by his brother Tom Hinke of Chicago and his wife Marilyn. Bob married Mary Ann Kautz (deceased) in Phoenix in 1984 and welcomed 5 step children, Adam Kautz (deceased), Linda Gonzalez, John Kautz, Ralph Kautz and Francine Dees. They remained committed to each other until MaryAnn’s passing 4 years ago. Together they raised their beloved grandson Kory Kautz. They also shared their lives with 20 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Bob enjoyed both watching and playing sports, especially baseball which he played while growing up. He built an ice rink for his kids in their Chicago backyard to play hockey and he coached his daughters in youth softball leagues. Bob was a lifelong White Sox, Blackhawks and White Castle burger fan. He also bowled, but golf became his favorite sport to play, especially the 19th hole. He was a skilled handyman and helped out friends and family with home projects. He hosted family pool parties and was always manning the grill. Cremation has been performed. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, July 22nd, at Shadow Mountain Mortuary, 2350 East Greenway Road, Phoenix, AZ. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bob’s honor may be made to the McCormick –Stillman Railroad Park, 7301 East Indian Bend Rd, Scottsdale, AZ or a Police or Firefighters Organization of your choice.
