Hope Starr Craig

January 18, 1947March 9, 2018

Pickens - Hope Starr (French) Craig of Pickens, SC died peacefully at home on March 9, 2018 after a 6 year battle with leukemia.

Starr was born on January 18, 1947 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Her parents, Frederick and Dorothy French moved their family to Las Vegas, NV when she was 8 years old where she eventually met the love of her life and husband of almost 54 years; Philip Clarence Craig. They raised their two children, Kimberly Edith and Matthew Philip out west in Nevada and Arizona. Over the years, they were blessed to have 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. As their family grew and changed, so did their locations taking them to Oklahoma, back to Arizona, many trips to the Philippines where their daughter & family served in missions, and upon retirement, to settle in Pickens, SC where she designed the home they had built on the property where Philip grew up. Their son, Matthew; owner of Amber Island Tattoo, soon made Pickens home for his family as well. Wherever they lived, Starr quickly made it feel like home and bloomed where she was planted. Her family was her top priority and she loved being a “Homemaker.” In every place she called home, she was involved in a local church and in the community, ready to serve and develop lifelong friendships along the way. She is well-known for her sincere hospitality and for making everyone feel like family. She was an encourager, artist, poet, and a woman who authentically lived out her faith in Jesus Christ, even in her most difficult of days.

Starr will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by her husband, Philip; her children Kim (Brent) Burdick and Matt (Hannah) Craig; her grandchildren Drew, Dawson, Devri, Danya, Jaden and AmberLynn Starr; her great-grandchildren, Amelie & Mathis and her siblings, Fred (Maria) French and Ruth Ann (Gordon) Rand.

A memorial service to celebrate and remember the life of our beloved Hope Starr Craig will be held at East Pickens Baptist Church, 2244 Gentry Memorial Hwy, Pickens, SC 29671 on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at 10 am. Starr loved God’s Word, so in lieu of flowers, she requested that any donations be made to the Gideons at the link listed below.

Many thanks to Elljean Baptist Church and East Pickens Baptist Church for their unfailing support and for all who have upheld Starr and family in prayer.

Dear Family, how well I know your sorrow of physically losing Starr. We weep but know full well that she is now at home safe with our God. She is still in our heart as we remember her overflowing love and kindness and how she wished all of us well, family and friend alike. She always made everyone feel special. We look up and pray that our tears will cease and be only left with wonderful memories of our sister, mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, cousin and our special friend. I will continue to whisper a word to her now and then. I love you, sis!!

Starr died as she lived: fighting for herself, for those she loved, and for the multitudes she cared for, making every possible effort to live the life of a Christian wife, mother, sister, friend, and acquaintance. A life well-lived.
