Hattie Lee Akins

Hattie Lee Akins, 90, passed away Thursday, August 9, 2018 at Quail Ridge Alzheimer's Special Care Center in Memphis, Tennessee. She was born December 7, 1927 to William Leamon and Eunice Hyde Carpenter. Hattie Lee attended Pontotoc High School and graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville with a sociology degree in 1949.

She was married to Max Whitworth Akins on September 8, 1949 at the First Baptist Church in Pontotoc. Hattie Lee was active in both her church and community. She was a member of the First Baptist Church for over 80 years demonstrating her servant's heart and strong Christian faith. She taught Sunday School, Church Training, Royal Ambassadors, Girls in Action and was active in Women on Missions.

Hattie Lee was secretary of the Pontotoc Park Commission for many years as well as a member of the Fine Arts Club serving as President. She was always involved in her children's activities. She was a Cub Scout Leader, Girl Scout Leader and member of the Parent-Teacher Organization for Pontotoc City Schools.

She loved her family and enjoyed visits with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Max and Hattie Lee enjoyed watching their children and grandchildren play high school sports. She was an avid fan of PHS sports, especially baseball, cross country, tennis and cheerleading.

Services will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 11, at the First Baptist Church in Pontotoc with Dr. Ken Hester officiating; burial will follow in the Pontotoc Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to service time. Browning Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of arrangements.

Hattie Lee is survived by her four children: one daughter, Debbie (Bob) Ray of Pontotoc; three sons, Steve (Judy) Akins of Memphis, Tennessee, Kent (Teresa) Akins of Maitland, Florida and Chris (Elizabeth) Akins of Petoskey, Michigan. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren, Evan (Christy) Ray, Jordan (Lili) Ray, Whitney (Kyle) Hood, Lee (Molly) Akins, Patrick (Madeline) Akins, Andrew (Haley) Akins, Sarah (Philip) Reed, Macy Akins, Christopher Akins, Lachlan Akins, Declan Akins, Tristin Akins; eleven great-grandchildren and beloved caregivers Diana Williams, Peggy Lauderdale and Kaye Berry.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 62 years. Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
