OBITUARY

Mrs Debra Ann Waugh

August 19, 1951September 15, 2019

We are sad to announce that Debie Waugh passed away in Port Alberni on Sunday, September 15, 2019 at the age of 68 years.

Predeceased by her parents, Debie is survived by loving husband Ken; children Darin (Kazia) and Jeremy (Kerri); grandchildren Gabe, Layne, Jack and Charlotte; brother Dwight (Carol) as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Born on the prairies, Debie’s family moved to the Alberni Valley when she was 4 years old. Growing up in Port Alberni, Debie graduated from ADSS, completing her degree as a Registered Nurse in Victoria in 1971. After graduation Debie returned to Port Alberni where she began her 35 year career as a nurse in the Emergency and Operating Rooms. In July of 1971 she married her childhood sweetheart and next door neighbor Ken and they began their family a few years later. She loved being in the outdoors and was a very active person, enjoying skiing, golf, boating and especially camping. Her favourite camping spot was on Quadra Island, where she spent every summer for nearly fifty years. In addition to being greatly missed by her family and friends, Debie left an impression on many of the patients who were fortunate enough to have her as a nurse through the years. The family would like to thank all the staff at WCGH, especially Dr Lund and the nursing and care staff for all their comfort and support. A Celebration of Debie’s Life will be held at the Italian Hall Events Centre ~ 4065 6th Ave, Port Port Alberni on October 12th from 1-4pm Stories, messages and condolences may be offered to the family at www.chapelofmemories.ca In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Debie’s memory to the Alzheimer Society of BC, Provincial Office, #300 . 828 West 8th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V5Z 1E2 or The West Coast General Hospital Foundation, 3949 Alberni Hwy, Port Alberni, BC, V9Y 4S1

Sincere condolences to Ken and family on the passing of their beautiful wife, mother and grandmother. Having worked at WCGH for 11 years I got to know Debie. She was a bright light with her beautiful smile and upbeat personality. Always so full of energy and fun. She provided great care to many patients over the years. Debie tried to convince me I should be a nurse, but I assured her I didn't have what it takes to do the required job. Nurse, just another word to describe a person strong enough to tolerate everything and soft enough to understand everyone. Debie had it all and did it all.

Debie was a wonderful nurse always cheerful and willing to help both her patients and colleagues. The past years have been a struggle for all of your family... I admire Ken's ongoing devoted and loving care he so willingly gave to his wife of many years.

We have known the Waugh family for over 30 years, as we all camp together every summer on Quadra Island at We Wai Kai Campsite. We have become a big Quadra family, and our kids grew up on the beach for many summers! Debbie was such a kind, loving, warm friend and wonderful, amazing mother! On rainy days on Quadra, Debie entertained the kids in their camper, painting rocks, playing games, giving them snacks and making sure they were all happy. We loved hanging out at the campsite with her, talking and laughing and sharing stories about life. We had many long chats about everything under the sun! Ken and Debie were such a strong, caring couple and so happy and content! They were an amazing example of pure love! The Russell family will really miss you in the summers, Debie. We will think of you and cherish our memories of you forever! Love, Anne, Brent, Ben and Laura Russell xoxo🌻
