Born in Ridderkirk, Netherlands on January 6, 1934 Gerrit , known as George passed away on August 24, 2020. Predeceased by his daughter Lena, parents Gerrit and Elisabeth VanKooten and sister Mickey Weening. Survived by his wife of 56 years Belva (Alwood), daughters Margaret Onyschtschuk (Paul) and Belva Levang of Port Alberni, B.C.; Jacqueline Kreeger of Richmond Hill, Georgia; and Georgina VanKooten of Mission, B.C. Ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Brothers Joe (Enid) VanKooten and Jake (Elaine) VanKooten of Port Alberni, B. C.; John (Wendy) VanKooten of Kelowna, B. C. and Casey (Patryce) of Victoria, B. C. Sisters Lena Groenendyk, Jean Woppenkamp, Liz Merx of Port Alberni, B.C. and Pat VanNus (Dirk) of Maple Ridge, B.C. and numerous nieces and nephews. George was the oldest son in a family of 5 boys and 5 girls. He attended grade school and vocational school where he learned his electrical trade. The family immigrated to Canada in 1952 and came to Port Alberni in 1957 after spending time in Alberta where he worked for Calgary Power and Northern Electric. Upon coming to Port Alberni George found work at the Alberni Plywood Division of MacMillan Bloedel Limited and stayed until the mill closed in 1991. George then started his own roofing business with his daughter Lena. He retired from the roofing business in 2007 to enjoy his pastime of gardening and wood working projects. George was a Master bowler and enjoyed going to tournaments to pit his skills against other Master bowlers.
