Nettie Dierlam Avary Williams

February 27, 1931October 24, 2018

Nettie Dierlam Avary Williams was born Feb 27th, 1931 and passed from this life on Oct. 24th, 2018 after a valiant fight with Pulmonary Fibrosis for the last two years. Her love for our country was evident in the work she chose; as a Civil Service Employee at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, at Fort Benning, Georgia, as well as at The Army Arsenal in Rock Island, Illinois. Her courage and determination provided such inspiration for her family. She was preceded in death by her former husbands, Floyd Avary of Columbus, Georgia and Bill Williams of Houston, Texas, as well as by her daughter, Lynn Ellen Harkrader of Spartanburg, South Carolina. She is survived by her two sons, Phillip Avary (Nicole) of Columbus, Georgia and Mark Avary (Janette) of Brewton, Alabama and by her loving companion, Otto Schrieber. Her eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild give promise in taking her legacy of life forward. As a sixth generation Texan, and avid genealogist, her family stretches far and wide. She was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, Jamestowne Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century, The Colonial Dames of America, Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865, National Hugenot Society, National Society Ladies of the Thistle, Order of the Descendants of the Ancient Honorable Artillery Company and the National Society of the American Colonists. Her passion for this country and its majesty was reflected in her love of birding and as such she had joined Volksmarch to hike across most of the 50 states in the U.S.A. She was indeed the backbone of a beautiful American family and she will be treasured for her strength forever. Services will be held in Seadrift, Texas at the Dierlam Family Cemetery at 1pm on Monday, October 29th . In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the San Antonio Colony Society of Mayflower Descendants.

My beautiful Aunt Nettie lived in a pine forrest with our cousins and our uncle. This magical place of coolness and shade was a blissful escape from the Texas sun. When my mother and her sister (Aunt Nettie) would get together, most of their time was spent discussing the relatives that created our DNA miso-mash from long ago, but one day we while visiting her in Columbus, Georgia we decided to visit Callaway Gardens.

Yes, in the middle of the forrest was a garden and in the garden was a pool of water with a fountain in the middle. This is where we were bound.

Of course the children dressed and rushed to the water first - delight-filled moment of feeling the water and watching one another attempt to share this glee. And then, my Aunt Nettie appeared from the dressing room. Her black mane of hair, her light blue of eyes and her jet black one piece suit against her ivory skin took my breath away. She was poetry in motion. She was woman defined. She was a true inspiration worthy of Byron or Keats or any poet with a heart. And, she was coming toward us to laugh with us in the sun.

Today she is still with us- inspiring us- holding our hand - and sharing this life dance. Thank you for your grace, my lovely Aunt Nettie. Thank you.
