

Carl Henry Deiz, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away on December 1st, 2014. He was born on November 16th, 1920 to parents William and Elnora in Portland, Oregon. Carl was raised in the Portland area, graduating from Franklin High School. He was an Army Veteran serving in the US Army Air Corp during World War II. He was one of the famed Tuskegee Airmen. His story is part of history. In his military career he became a 1st Lieutenant as an officer. In the midst of military service and the war, Carl graduated from the University of Portland with a Bachelor’s degree in business. He was very proud of his Magna Cum Laude status. Carl would sometimes joke that he was part of University of Portland’s football team for its one year of existence. Carl was a man of faith. From his youth he was an active member of St. Phillip the Deacon Episcopal Church. He used his background in accounting to serve his church faithfully as their bookkeeper. In his career Carl worked as a budget analyst for Bonneville Power. He worked hard and supported his family for many years until his retirement. He met his dear wife Mercedes in Portland. They were married on October 5th 1949 in Vancouver, Washington. Their marriage brought 3 children to the world. Raising William, Karen and Gilbert was one of his greatest joys in life. Their relationship spanned 56 years until his sweetheart Mercedes passed in 2005. In his spare time Carl loved to travel. His favorite place was Disneyland or going on cruises with his wife. He loved trains, being a father, and serving in the church. His family remembers him as a trustworthy, patient, dependable, caring, and funny individual. His seven grandchildren and one great grandchild on the way will miss his kind, loving demeanor. Carl is survived by his sons William and Gilbert, and his seven grandchildren Nickolas, Hannibal, Brendan, Ashley, Angela, Galen, and Noah. His legacy will live on through his posterity. He was loved and will be missed.
