Born on April 5, 1948, in Ashland, Ohio, Ed Highman was the second child and only son of Ford and Florence Highman. His father, a paid soloist, sang in the mainline churches of Ashland while his mom took the children to the local Brethren church.
So, Ed had a head knowledge of the Faith as he went through Ashland High School, enjoying a full social life which included choir and drama. These interests he continued at Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, from 1966 to 1971. But more importantly, his knowledge of the Truth went from his head to his heart; he became a true follower of Jesus Christ. Another important relationship that began at BJU was with a girl from the West, Linda. They married in 1970 and began their teaching careers in 1971 at Salem Private School.
Ed taught sixth grade for 42 years, 10 1/2 at SPS and 32 ½ at Portland Christian Elementary School in the same class room. He had an intuitive understanding of the transitional phase that 11 and 12 year olds go through from children to teenagers in a hormonal fog. He stood by them not only as a teacher but as a friend, admonishing them as well as encouraging them. He capitalized on the competitive nature of the age group by reinforcing facts in relays and games.
During the 2010-2011 school year, he recognized that his handwriting at the chalkboard was growing smaller, cramped, and literally going downhill. Often he would open his mouth to speak, and no sound would come out. He found himself forgetting more than usual. In January, 2013, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease; and he retired in May of that year. For more than ten years he suffered a steady decline of abilities and strength, but his love for the Lord and faith in His loving provision kept him anchored to the Rock of his salvation.
He is survived by his, Linda, of 53 years and his daughter, Katie of Wakefield, England and, of course, by a host of friends and family who will miss his sense of humor and sympathy.
