Jerode Majella Dean passed away April 8, 2021 at the age of 84, surrounded by family. She was born in Portland, Ore., to Joseph and Mary (McConnell) Dean and was the youngest of seven children. She was a beloved sister, aunt, and friend. Her zest for life, ready sense of humor, and kind support will be missed immensely. She was raised in Holy Redeemer Parish in North Portland and graduated from St. Mary's Academy, Marylhurst College, and Oregon College of Education in Monmouth.
Jerode was a devoted teacher to students with special needs throughout her career. Some of her students stayed in touch with her regularly over the years. She taught in Oregon, Idaho, Germany, and France and maintained a lifetime friendship with the people she met overseas. She retired from Wilson High School in Portland and during retirement volunteered at the Grotto and Multnomah Falls. She was an avid traveler and reader. She enjoyed playing cards and successfully played any hand she was dealt. Jerode took great pride in her Irish heritage and she was the "fun" aunt who hosted joyous annual Christmas eve gatherings for the whole family.
Jerode is survived by her sister, Ruth Davidson; and many nieces and nephews. Jerode was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Joan Dean, Rosemary Nash, Tom Dean, Fr. Thad Dean, and Molly Woods.
Love and prayers.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jerode's name to The Grotto (https://thegrotto.org/) are welcome and appreciated. Donations will go towards maintaining the beautiful grounds at The Grotto.
