One of my fondest memories of Bob is his start in scuba diving. It was the late 80’s and we were all gathered at the Stankelis house for a holiday celebration when Bob asked my dad, Tom, about scuba, as we had been certified for years at that point and had our own gear. Tom, Bob, and myself talked for hours about the joy of scuba, Bob then asked if he could give it a try and my dad said sure. A few days later Bob was at our house, in Bristol Ct., with his bathing suit. My dad filled the bath tub, while I prepared the gear. After a few minutes of instruction Bob was ready for his first “dive”, he sunk beneath the water and was hooked. Little did we know that day that he would go on to have such a brilliant and meaningful career in Marine Biology. The world will miss you and your work, Rest In Peace Bob.

I enjoyed working with Bob on his vision for the Narragansett Bay Research Reserve – he was a dedicated, kind, and gentle soul. We both understood what it was like to work on and care for an island as a special place along with the practical hiccups that pop up from time to time. He and I were walking on the north side of Prudence Island on a sunny but cold day in mid-March years ago when I told him that I would be out of the office for several months because our adoption had finally come through. Bob and I had just started working together a couple of weeks earlier and, even with the short notice, he had nothing but kindness and happiness to offer upon hearing the news. He was one of the first reserve colleagues that I shared our news with and that will always be a happy memory.
