Marcella May (Jacobs Herbst) Bateman (80) was born March 27, 1932 in Niobrara, Nebraska and passed away August 2, 2012 in Sumner with her family by her side. She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy Bateman, parents Ihno B. and Ella Nora Jacobs, brothers Ihno William Jacobs, Walter Jacobs, Clarence Jacobs and Russell Jacobs. Marcella is survived by her sisters Evelena Haynes, Luella Best, Betty Ann Pepperling and Elnora Gates (Steve). In addition, she is survived by biological and step (bonus) family members that include children Tina Cook (Norman), Penny Webb, Keith Bateman, Debbie Mickey, Carol Vandver and bonus niece Karen Bertrand. Grandchildren include Philip Cook (Grace), Miles Webb, Grace Webb, Lisa Orio (Troy), Julie Collard, Shane Bateman (Nancy), Todd Bateman (Annette), Stacey Bateman, Krista Mickey, Josh Mickey, Jamie Smith (Todd) and 14 great-grandchildren. Marcella’s sweetness, love of music, writing and connections to others derived from her early family life. She was the middle child of nine that struggled through the Great Depression as many families did, but the Jacobs family was rich in love, kindness and gentle natures. Marcella had a wicked sense of humor; always ready with a joke.Marcella proudly worked at the Puyallup Police Department retiring as the Records Supervisor in 1992. The police department was her second family in many ways and continued into retirement. For many years she was a member of the Tacoma Chapter of Sweet Adelines enjoying friendship, music, shows and competitions. Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association or the Pulmonary Hypertension Association. The family gives a heartfelt thank you to those who provided comfort and care for Marcella in her final months including Cascade Caregivers of Enumclaw, Stafford Suites Assisted Living of Sumner, Gentiva Health Services and Multicare Hospital and Hospice Service.
