George Carleton Hepting
April 21, 1938 – August 29, 2019
George Carleton "Carl" Hepting, 81, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and formerly of New York City and Newport, Rhode Island, died on August 29, 2019. He was born on April 21st, 1938 in Asheville, North Carolina.
Carl was the devoted husband of Diana Duncan Hepting, who passed away in 2010. He is survived by his three children: Anne Flegenheimer and husband Mark, Saginaw, MI; Caroline Hepting, Raleigh, NC; and Dyson Hepting and wife Samantha, Raleigh, NC; and four grandchildren, Trevor Flegenheimer, Chicago, IL; Katie Flegenheimer, Indianapolis, IN; Alec and Madeleine Hepting, Raleigh, NC; and brother John B. Hepting of Raleigh, NC. Additionally, Carl is survived by his sister-in-law Mildred Duncan Baker and husband Matt.
Carl attended Yale Music School and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He had a career in fashion and merchandising, including his work as an international buyer of antiques at Bloomingdales and Bonwit Teller. He partnered with Jeane Eddy to open a Madison Avenue women's clothier which they ran together for 30 years. Carl's retirement passion included working for the Preservation Society of Newport County and their nonprofit efforts to maintain the history of Newport, Rhode Island. Additionally, Carl was an accomplished classical pianist, an avid gardener and art lover.
The family will receive friends at Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community on Sunday, September 1st at 2:00pm with a reception to follow.
A service will be held at 9:00am on Saturday, September 14th, 2019 at Saint John’s on the Point in Newport, RI. Inurnment to follow.
Carl was also preceded in death by his parents, Anna Love Hepting and George Henry Hepting.
