Born and raised in Fayetteville, Boots was the only child of loving parents, Maurice and Dorothy (Dot) Fleishman. Although an only child, Boots was part of a large extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins on both her mother and father’s side.
Boots attended The University of Miami and following a transfer, Woman’s College, now UNC-Greensboro. After college, she was introduced to the love of her life, Murray Unger, himself a lifelong resident of Petersburg, Virginia. Following a fast courtship, Boots and Murray married May 7, 1958. Residing in Petersburg, Boots and Murray ran Unger’s Men’s Clothing (together with Murray’s brother Sam and his wife, Nancy) and raised their family, son Roger Unger and daughter Lisa Beth Unger Sandman. Boots and Murray loved to travel, socialize with golf friends and cheer for UVA football and basketball. They were also both deeply committed to their Jewish heritage and dedicated members of Congregation Brith Achim in Petersburg. In 2008, Boots and Murray moved to Raleigh, NC to be closer to family.
Boots was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband and daughter-in-law, Ann Unger. Boots leaves behind her son, Roger, and granddaughters, Alexis Unger and Alyssa Unger as well as her daughter, Lisa (husband, Michael), and grandsons, Ryan Sandman (fiancé Trish Mikell) and Marshall Sandman.
The family would like to deeply thank Dr. Steve Liebowitz for his excellent care over the past 13 years and to the staff of The Rosewood Health Center at The Cypress of Raleigh for their warm and dedicated attention while Boots was in their care.
A graveside service will be held at 3:00pm on Wednesday, July 28, at Brith Achim Cemetery 319 S. Crater Rd., Petersburg, VA.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to Congregation Brith Achim (314 W. South Street, Petersburg, VA 23805), The American Cancer Society or a personal favorite charity.
