

Born to the late Curtis L. Washington and Gertrude Hill in West Chester, PA, on June 25, 1921, he was the oldest of 9 siblings.
During his childhood, he assisted his mother in the care of the younger siblings. It was during this time he learned about commitment and responsibility. He assisted the community when needed.
After moving to Reading, PA, in 1940, he held several jobs until he joined the U.S. Navy and served during WWII. He was honorably discharged in November 1945. After his return to Reading, he worked as a handyman in the community and was always willing to help family and friends.
He was employed at Carpenter Steel and retired from Carpenter Steel in 1985. He met and married his present wife, Jannie Winns, on November 8, 2003. They enjoyed traveling visiting family and friends. He loved watching golf, especially Tiger Woods. They always had a smile and good words for everyone that crossed their path.
Mr. Washington is survived by his wife, Jannie; children: Curtis L. (wife, Bonnie) Washington, Brenda L. (husband, Edward) Mann, and Cheryl A. Washington; stepchildren: Marcia Jones, Robert McCrea, and Albert (wife, Monica) Winns and sisters: Viola Whitford and Julius Anderson.
There are 22 grand-children, 30 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth; children: Robert L. Washington, Barbara A. Washington, and Juanita B. Washington; 2 brothers: Bud Hill and Peter Wright; 4 sisters: Sis Hill, Betty Hill, Edna Boggs, and Rose Anderson.
Services will be Saturday October 26, 2013 at 2 p.m. in Zion Baptist Church, 224 Washington St., Reading. Burial will be private. A viewing will be Saturday 1-2 p.m. in the church.
