Bernie Smigiel

Bernard Joseph Smigiel It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Bernard. He passed away the morning of October 31, 2020 at the age of 83 years after experiencing a fall at home on October 30. He is predeceased by his wife Julia in 2008; mother Mary; father Joseph; brother Allan; sisters, Olga, Victoria and Anne; and special niece Cheryl. Bernie is survived by his daughters Nadine and Nicole (Kelly Phillipchuk); two grandchildren, Curtis and Kylie and Odin; grand-doggie from Estevan. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Bernie worked for CN Rail for 40 years and retired in 1995. He also had a successful janitorial business called Julie’s Janitorial for a number of years. Uncle Bernie, as he was known, was always there to guide with the wisdom of conversation as well as a helping hand. He would be the first to drop what he was doing if someone from the family or a friend needed help. Uncle Bernie and Aunty Julie’s house was always open for family and friends when needed. Dad really enjoyed A&W breakfast eggers, thank you A&W on Avonhurst & Albert for keeping Papa well fed every morning! We would like to thank the paramedics who came to Dad’s side as well as the emergency staff at the Regina General Hospital. The compassionate care that was given to Dad from the 5A nurses both named Chelsea, was exceptional. Their knowledge and compassionate care also extended to us as we walked through this experience with Dad. With short notice, Father Brad Fahlman came to the hospital to give Bernie his last rights, as his Catholic faith was an important part of his life. Those so wishing may make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan or The Canadian Mental Health Association, Regina Branch. Due to the current COVID – 19 restrictions a private service will take place.

We are so sorry Nadine, Nicole and family for your loss. Uncle Bernie was a very quiet, sensible, stable force and always willing to lend a hand to whomever he could, he will be missed by many. We have so many memories.. I remember the many summers with your parents, starting on Aberdeen St., train trips to Regina, road trips back from Regina with your Dad driving us all back, the wonderful summers as a kid spent there. So many more memories that we will always cherish. Their entire family is back together now, with much joy and peace, watching over you, us all. Much love to you both xo

My sincere condolences on the loss of your dad. I have so many “stories” of when I lived next door to him - he was so helpful & kind & gentle & giving. He was a true gem of a neighbour! I truly missed him when I moved away. May the fond memories you have of your dad help you through this difficult time. I keep you all close to my heart & in my prayers.

It was a sad day to hear of the passing of my Uncle Bernie. I have many fond memories when as a child our families would visit one another whether it be in Regina or Thunder Bay. It's hard to believe that so many years have already passed since those carefree childhood days. Sometimes it seems just like yesterday.

Rest in peace Uncle Bernie and may your memory be a blessing.

I am so sorry to hear of Bernie's passing. I knew him years ago when we used to spend the most fun Saturdays together with him and Julie, hosting yard sales. Julie made wonderful lunches & always had the coffee on. Bernie kept us laughing the whole time. He was a lovely sweet man. My deepest sympathies to you, Nicole and Nadeen.
