As daughter Linda said goodbye on Monday, February 15, 2021, Irene was surely joining her parents Ioan and Maria Marcu; husbands Stanley and Albert; sisters Florence, Mary, Lena, Ann, Victoria, Marion, and Flossie; and brothers John, George, and Constantine. Irene was born in Horizon, SK on October 27, 19XX (those of you who know Irene will understand the XX…..OK it’s 1923). Irene grew up on a farm near Cupar. At age 11, she lived with her grandparents in Regina for a year, and attended church every Sunday where she was honoured to read with the cantors and recite the Creed in Romanian. Irene married Stanley Szypulski in October 1960. Stan died suddenly in September 1970 leaving Irene and daughter Linda too soon. Irene married Albert Czernick in August 1971. Irene and Albert were married for 41 years enjoying celebrations with family, friends, and the Toronto Blue Jays until Albert’s death in 2012. From 2010 to 2019, Irene’s birthdays became an event celebrated by a “girls’ lunch out” or a full blown party. On occasion, a limousine would take guests to their destination serenaded by Dean Martin’s ‘That’s Amore’. Parties could include singing classic favourites or a stroll down karaoke memory lane. Irene loved cooking, knitting, gardening, and singing. Her generous spirit meant that guests could expect to leave with homemade bread, buns, cabbage rolls, or perogies. Irene also knit mittens and scarves for children at a nearby community school as well as for children at the church school. A proud moment was receiving a HUGE thank you card drawn by the students. Irene added joy to our world with her beautiful smile and singing voice; she was always singing in English or Romanian. As 2020 changed the entire world, Irene carried on but grew weaker and more tired. On Feb 15, 2021, she answered the call for one more angel in heaven. A dear friend said “Irene was easy to love” and those who know her will agree. She will always be in our hearts - memory eternal. Due to current SHA restrictions, a private Funeral Mass for family and friends will be held at St. George Orthodox Church in Regina, SK on Monday, February 22.

Linda, I am so sorry to see your mom has passed away. I have NEVER met anyone who could make a perogy like her again (and I married into a Ukranian family!) I will always remember her huge smile and her huger heart. She always made your friends welcome. I do also remember that she loved to sing. Please know that I am thinking of you at this time.
