As a young woman, Nuoi fell in love and married Dong Le. Soon after marrying Dong was drafted into the Vietnam military service where Nuoi was forced to take care of the growing family by herself. The years after the war were difficult for the majority of the Vietnamese people. Knowing they wanted a better life for their family, they planned the journey that would eventually lead them to the United States.
Nuoi and Dong settled in Fort Smith, Arkansas when they first migrated to the United States. They worked tirelessly in the factories to provide for the children. However, being the entrepreneurs that they were, they eventually saved enough money to open a business, a Chinese restaurant (Golden Palace). After a few years, they wanted more for the children and decided to move the family to the Pacific Northwest on the advice of a dear friend who ran a small Vietnamese church. The sacrifice was worth it and the family was able to save enough money to start another business, a catering truck (before it was fashionable). Nuoi and Dong worked hard on their business and soon saved enough money to buy a home in Kent, WA. Their business was successful and provided for the family as each child finished school and eventually left the nest. Nuoi and Dong amicably separated after a long marriage.
After years of hard work and significant sacrifices for her family Nuoi was able to enjoy her retirement, albeit too short. She was involved with the Kent Vietnamese Church and was active in the women’s congregation. She was also an active participant in the Seattle retirement community where she performed during certain festivals. Nuoi also had a desire to travel and gain exposure to different cultures. During her retirement she was able to spend time abroad in Europe, Australia, and many southwest Asian countries including: Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, and many others.
There were many struggles early in life that could have soured her spirit but she found encouragement in her ability to overcome any obstacle. Nuoi had a zest for life and her personality was infectious. Her constant positive energy and optimism will be missed but is carried on by her family and many wonderful friends.
Nuoi Nguyen is survived by six children, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Due to her bravery and sacrifice there will be many generations of Le’s to follow.
