Florence M. Morphis
June 26, 1936 – October 12, 2020
Florence Patton Montgomery Morphis, age 84, passed away on October 12, 2020, at her home in Madison with family and caregivers there to comfort her. Visitation will be at Parkway Funeral home in Ridgeland on Wednesday, October 14, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 15, 2020, at 11 a.m. with Reverend Linda Rickman officiating. Burial will follow at Jessamine Cemetery in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Florence was born on June 26, 1936 in Yazoo City, Mississippi to Patrick Logan Montgomery (Jack) and Laura Irmie Zeigler Montgomery. Her early childhood was spent on their family farm in Ebenezer, Mississippi with her parents and two sisters. However, they soon moved from their farm in Ebenezer to Pickens where she would later meet the love of her life, James Everett Morphis. They eloped on July 30, 1954, and were wed in a Methodist Church in Biloxi, Mississippi. She worked until they had their first daughter, at which time, she decided to stay home and focus on being a mother and homemaker. Both of these jobs came naturally to her. She was a wonderful and nurturing mother and worked hard to keep her household running smoothly. When both girls were grown she began to take on other interests such as learning to fly an airplane. She took flying lessons and took her solo flight. She enjoyed adventure and even rode with a stunt pilot in an air show and absolutely loved it. She wanted to skydive at least one time but was never able to fulfill that wish. By this time, grandchildren entered the picture and she was the best Mimi anyone could be blessed to have. The word “no” was not in her vocabulary when it came to her grandchildren. She and G-daddy (James) spent countless hours with their grandchildren. They took them on trips and camping in their RV. She also was a member of Madison United Methodist Church and sang in the choir for many years. She loved being in the choir and only stopped when her health no longer allowed her to continue. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter Caroline Patton Moore and her sister Beverly Montgomery Hebert. She is survived by her husband of sixty-six years, James Everett Morphis, her daughters Lauralee Michele Morphis Cannady and Stephanie Morphis Moore along with sons-in-law Charles Richard Moore (Rick) and William R. Cannady, III (Russ), her five grandchildren Lauralee Elizabeth Moore, Charles Jameson Moore, Montgomery Sellers Moore (Mery), William Rousseau Cannady, IV (Will), and James Bankston Cannady (Banks). She is also survived by one sister Jacqueline Montgomery Holleman and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Aunt Shorance was always my birthday buddy because my birthday is June 25 and hers was June 26. I felt very special to have that particular connection with her that the other cousins didn't have. I will miss her so. She has always had such a special place in my heart.
God bless you, Aunt Shorance, and know we will watch over your girls for you.
