November 15, 1925 – March 6, 2021
TENA (STAM) HOOGENDAM, went peacefully to be with her Lord on Saturday, March 6th, 2021 at the age of 95. She was loved by many and will always be remembered as portraying “peace that surpasses all understanding” that only our Lord and Savior can give, during the past year of challenges.
Tena was born in the Netherlands, specifically Nieuwerkerk aan den Ijssel, on Novemer 15, 1925. Her parents, Lourens & Bertha (Schachtschabel) Stam had four girls- Anna Maria (Annie), Teuntje (Tena), Bertha Maria and Klazina Hermina (Sien).
On February 14, 1951, Tena married John Hoogendam, Sr. Shortly after they wed, Tena immigrated to the United States with John, and they began a lifelong career of dairy farming together. They began their marriage living in Artesia, CA but ultimately moved to Corona, CA where they would spend the remainder of their married years. Their love story was one for the books. It was one filled with perseverance, friendship, respect, teamwork, and commitment to each other, their business, and their family.
The two were married for 67 years before John passed away in April of 2018. During those years together, John and Tena worked alongside each other on their farm, Hoogendam Dairy, which was established in 1956 in Artesia, CA. Together they raised four children - Marvin, Betty, Debbie and John Jr. Tena loved being a housewife and mother. She treasured her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Tena was a woman who expressed gratitude often for her life’s blessings. She had tremendous faith in Jesus and she lived that faith out daily.
In her spare time, Tena enjoyed sewing, cross stitching, crocheting, playing cards and dominos, and she loved celebrating birthdays and big celebrations with family and friends at her home. As a couple, John and Tena cherished their tight knit group of friends that they shared memories with for over 50 years. Tena was also enjoyed talking on the phone and was always sure to keep in touch with her parents, siblings, and family still living in the Netherlands. In their years of being able to travel, John and Tena took many trips to visit family in the Netherlands and enjoyed vacationing in Hawaii.
Tena is survived by her four children Marvin (Susan) Hoogendam, Merced, CA; Betty Hoogendam, Corona, CA; Debbie (John) Schlegel, Ontario, CA; and John Hoogendam, Jr., Merced, CA. In addition, Tena had four granddaughters, Barbara (Adam) Greenberg and Chrissy (Russell) Verhoeven (daughters of Marvin and Susan Hoogendam) and Kimberly Schlegel and Kelly (Patric) Birdsong (daughters of John and Debbie Schlegel). Tena had 5 great-grandchildren, Dylan John & Nathan Greenberg, Willa and Nellie Verhoeven, and Owen John Birdsong.
The Hoogendam Family would like to express their deepest gratitude for the wonderful and dedicated staff at the Inland Christian Skilled Nursing Home. Through the struggles of 2020, they remained a compassionate and extremely caring home for so many loved ones.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Tena Hoogendam to Inland Christian Home.
