Patricia Elizabeth (Greiling) Johnson, of Rochester Hills, MI, passed away on August 29 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. Pat was born in Grosse Pointe on March 27, 1945 to Chester and Helen Greiling. She graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in 1963 and received a BA degree in Elementary Education from the University of Michigan in 1967.
Pat married Robert (Bob) Johnson, also a graduate of the GPHS class of ’63, in August of 1968, and together they recently reached the golden anniversary of a very happy and fulfilling marriage.
Pat taught third grade in the Ypsilanti, MI, school system for 2 years before staying home to care for her young children. She later taught adult English as a second language for Rochester Community Schools. Pat had a passion for teaching and cared for all of her students. She was an active volunteer and leader in church, scouting, PTA and community. She had a big heart and loved to learn about people and cultures. Pat was known to family, students, colleagues, neighbors and church for her vivacious personality, infectious smile, and kind and compassionate spirit.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers, Frederick and Chester Jr. (Chips). In addition to her husband, she is survived by her three children, Matt, Joel (wife Keirstn) Johnson, and Tricia (husband Rob VanTichelt), her six grandchildren, Avery, Samuel, and Elise Johnson, Maya, Lydia and Orin VanTichelt, and her two nieces, Dunrie Greiling and Christiana Seay.
A celebration of Pat’s life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, at St. Paul’s UMC, 620 Romeo St., Rochester, MI 48307, with visitation at 10:15 am and service starting at 11:00 am.
