Thurston H. Vickery, Jr.

May 18, 1941September 5, 2018

Thurston (Vick) H. Vickery, Jr., the son of Thurston H. Vickery and Vernon Ayers Adams, was born May 18, 1941, in Hartwell, Georgia, where he was raised and educated. He joined the Army in August of 1961 and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in August of 1967. He was very proud of serving our country. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and was also an expert marksman and sharpshooter. On May 18, 1988 he began working with Space Alliance at NASA and he retired on March 25, 2005.

On May 3, 1966, Vick was united in marriage with Erika Stock in Germany. He was a wonderful husband and amazing father, grandfather and great grandfather. Even better than that he was a great friend to all that knew him.

Vick was one of a kind. To know him was to love him. He would do anything for anyone. “Jack of all trades and master of none” was one of the most accurate statements he would make, even though we all knew he mastered pretty much everything he set out to do. In the past several years of his retirement he took up wood turning including his pens, which many of us have been blessed with and will hold them dear to our hearts because they were truly made out of love. If he wasn’t providing you with a great laugh, he was showering you with his knowledge. He has helped so many but never wanted to accept any help in return. If you looked up selflessness in the dictionary his name would proudly be there.

Vick was extremely proud of and loved his family very much and worked very hard to provide for them –even when his health tried to dictate otherwise. He will be remembered for many things including his “quick witted” sense of humor, joke telling and fondness of socializing. His emails will be greatly missed by all that received them. Also, his love for cooking and baking. If you could count on one thing it would be that you were going to try a new recipe the next time you saw him.

Vick passed away on Wednesday, September 5th, 2018, at the age of 77 years old aka “21”. “The most loveable person on the planet, just ask him.” He would say.

Vick will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Erika Vickery; children, Ilona (Lance) of Rockledge, Angie (Bobby) of Texas, Richard (Sherrie) of Port St John; six grandchildren, Justin of Texas, Ryan (Natalie) of North Carolina, Jayson (Jamilette) of Port St. John, Ashley (Brandon) of Port St. John, Lauren of Texas and Taylor of Port St. John; 4 great-grandchildren, Jayda, Jayla & Jayde (arriving soon) and Jaxon; brother Jerry (Ramona) of South Carolina, brother, Kenneth (Grace) of Florida; sisters, Vicki and Sandi of Georgia, brothers, Dusty and Timmy of Georgia; his mother Alice Ayers Adams of Rockledge and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flower arrangements and plants we ask as a family that you please donate to the American Heart Association.

Services will be held at the Life Event Center at Florida Memorial in Rockledge on Saturday, September 22, 2018. Visitation from 3:00 to 4:00 pm. We will be honoring Thurston H. Vickery with a Celebration of Life at 4:00 pm, because he truly embraced his life and lived it the way we all can only hope to match.

I have always called you, Mr Vickery although you were really like a second dad to me and treated me just like part of your lovely family. Ilona and I have been friends since we were 6 yrs old and you were always there for us. I remember you giving us rides to school and we'd listen to your country music. I will cherish years of knowing you. Rest in love and peace. You will be missed so very much.

I chose this picture because I have always wanted to make you proud Grandpa and I know I have. I will continue to make you proud through the years and I know you will always be by my side while I am accomplishing my dreams. Don't worry about us, you have taught us all so much and have kept us all together. That will not change. We will have to learn from each other now and share the knowledge you gave us to others. We will continue to make your recipes and I hope you will be there to guide us. I will miss hearing your voice the most. I will miss you everyday. I will never forget all the cookouts we have had together. We will continue to get together and eat a hotdog straight off the grill for you although I am not sure how you have done that all these years. We will continue to support each other. We will take care of the love of your life for she has lost part of herself. We will be strong for you because you have been strong for us all these years. You fought until the very end and never once gave up. I will never give up and continue to fight for you. You are the reason my dreams will come true!

A great brother and friend. He made the world a better place by helping many people. He was talented in many areas including auto mechanics, woodworking, computers and management. Before retirement from KSC, he was the Crawler Manager. Following his major heart attack, he lived his life doing what he wanted for 28 more years. He is sorely missed not only by his family but by his neighbors and many many friends. I thank God for loaning him to us for these 77 years.

Ken, Alice (Mom 95 yrs old), Hubert (Vick).

Mark and I send condolences to Erika, Ilona, Angie, Skipper and all the family. We remember Thurston as a talented and congenial person who loved his family. He enjoyed working on his car and sharing this gift with his children. His carpentry- wood working skills were remarkable. He made the most beautiful jewelry boxes. He was kind and had a delightful sense of humor.
We send prayers of comfort,
Julie and Mark Johnson
