Julia Quigg Dodd

Mrs. Julia Quigg Dodd, 90, of Rome, GA, passed away Monday, December 30, 2013, at a local hospital.

A native of Rome, Mrs. Dodd was born October 3, 1923, the daughter of the late B. F. Quigg, Sr., who served as Rome City School Superintendent for 30 years, and Annie May Bass Quigg. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Julius Black Dodd, Jr., and her brother, Byard Fowler Quigg, Jr. Mrs. Dodd attended Rome High School and the University of Georgia. She worked at Battey General Hospital for three years, where she met her future husband, J. B. Dodd, Jr. They married in 1946 and Dodd, who founded Rome Bank and Trust with his father, died in 1987. Mrs. Dodd served on the Board of Trustees for Darlington School, as well as the Building and Grounds and the Campaign for Darlington Committees. The Dodd family helped provide funds toward the restoration of the Dodd Dining Hall and the Neville Soccer Fields at Darlington. Mrs. Dodd also served on the Executive Committee, the Board of Visitors and the Building and Grounds Committee for Shorter University, the Board of Trustees for the Georgia Highlands Foundation and the Board of Visitors for Emory University. She served of the board of directors of the local chapter of the American Red Cross and the Board of Advisors for the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.

Mrs. Dodd was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, was past president of the Federated Garden Clubs of Rome and a member of the Four Seasons Garden Club. She was a past member of the United Way Board of Trustees, and helped establish the United Way Leadership Circle. She was a past member of the Rome Symphony Orchestra Guild and served as president of the Rome Symphony Women’s Auxiliary. She was a former president of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, and former regent of the Xavier Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a former president of the Rome Area Heritage Foundation.

Survivors include her daughter, Judy Dodd Bell (Gus), Rome; her son, Jay Dodd (Teresa), Rome; grandchildren, Amy Butler Rauton (Jay), Summerville, SC, Tripp Butler (Stephanie), Savannah, Matt Moore, Rome, Shellie Dodd-Bell (Simon), Stuttgart, Germany, Hannah Elizabeth Dodd, Columbus, Ohio, and Emily Taylor Dodd, Rome; and great grandchildren, Abby Rauton, Ansley Rauton, Jack Rauton, Beau Butler, Katie Butler, Maddie Moore, Lexi Moore, Gavin Bell and Logan Bell.

A private interment service was held Thursday, January 2, 2014, with Dr. William Flannagan officiating. The family received friends on Thursday, January 2, 2014, from 2 until 4 p.m. at the King Hall of the First Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Salvation Army, the American Red Cross or the First Presbyterian Church of Rome.
