John and Gertrude Edgar. He died on October 13, 2015 after a brief illness. Don
was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by Nancy, his wife of 55 years,
son Don Jr. and daughter-in-law Nancy, son Rick and daughter-in-law Jill, grand-
children Ashley, David and Katie and great grandson Brian; his sister Joyce Howard
and brother-in-law Jack, his brother John Jr. and sister-in-law Pat, his sister-in-law
Lynda Holbrook and brother-in-law Doug, several beloved nieces and nephews, and
countless friends and former students. Don's early school years were in Woodland,
where he started high school. The family moved to Roseville in 1945 and Don
graduated from Roseville Joint Union High School in 1948. As well as playing football
and basketball, he was an honor student. He was a student-athlete at Placer College
where he earned a football scholarship to the University of Utah, graduating in 1954.
Don served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Japan. He returned
to earn a Master's Degree from Sacramento State and began his teaching and coaching
at Roseville High School, and continued teaching at Sierra College where he coached
football, the ski team and the golf team. Don challenged his team members to excel on
the playing fields and in the classroom. In February 2009 he was inducted into the Sierra
College Athletic Hall of Fame. Don enjoyed the out-of-doors and was an avid sportsman.
He hunted, played golf, enjoyed archery and, most of all, loved fishing. He made fishing
rods and tied flies in hopes of catching the big one. Don remained a learner throughout
his life . . . always reading, both nonfiction and fiction, and the sports reports. He
believed in hard work, commitment and never giving up and lived his life by those values.
Don was deeply devoted to his family and spent many hours with Nancy along the
sidelines as his children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews played sports. He was
known to offer more than a few words of advice to the kids as they played. Most of all,
Don was a true family man and will always be remembered by those who love him.
Services to be held Tuesday October 20th at 10:00am at Lambert Funeral Home 400
Douglas Blvd., Roseville CA. For those who wish to honor his memory, the family
suggests a donation to Sierra College foundation Wolverine Athletic Association (WAA).
