OBITUARY
Aileen Z. Friedel
June 17, 1927 – February 5, 2019
Aileen Friedel (nee Zurbrugg) passed away peacefully on Tuesday February 5, 2019. Beloved wife of the late Kaid Friedel; dear mother of John Friedel and the late “Kat” Anne Friedel; cherished sister of Jean.
From a 2005 (concise version) biography compiled and written by Kaid Friedel (as part of a longer version written for the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary):
“Aileen Friedel, cellist; B.M. and graduate work, University of Pennsylvania, studied with Orlando Cole and the Curtis String Quartet; participated in the Tanglewood Music Festival and in Master Classes with Pablo Casals at Marlboro Music Festival; former faculty member at Park College (Parkville, MO) and Principia College (Elsa, IL); former cellist, North Carolina Symphony and Kansas City (MO) Philharmonic; principal cellist with the MUNY Opera Orchestra; cellist and soloist with the Alton (IL) Symphony Orchestra; adjunct professor of cello, St. Louis University, Southwestern Illinois College and Webster University Community Music School; member, American String Teachers Association, Viola Da Gamba Society of America, Early Music America and American Federation of Musicians; cello/gamba with St. Cecelia Consort, and cellist with Hawthorne Ensemble, Canterbury Quartet and St. Louis Trio.”
