Sinh Dong Lam
January 12, 1920 – February 4, 2021
Sinh Dong Lam was born on January 12th, 1920 in Hà Nội, Vietnam and passed away on February 4th, 2021 in St Louis, Missourri.
Sinh grew up to be a businessman in Vietnam selling wholesale merchandise, and the business became very successful and famous in the Qui Nhon province of Vietnam. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, Sinh and his wife, Lao Vuong De, persevered to help all 14 of their children escape the war and communism that took over Vietnam. The family was split up to achieve this, and they escaped to many areas of the world including Australia, Taiwan, Canada, and the United States. Sinh and De eventually left South Vietnam after all of their children were able to settle at their destinations. They reunited with 3 of their children in Durant, Oklahoma in 1978.
Sinh and De then decided to move to St. Louis where they opened their own Chinese cuisine restaurant, Chong Wah, in 1980. Sinh also proceeded to help some of his other children open their own restaurants in various places in St. Louis, Festus, and Granite City, IL. In 1997, he retired to take care his wife and left his business to his daughters.
In retirement, Sinh enjoyed being active and exercising whenever he could which included at least 4 hours of walking in the neighborhood daily, doing Tai Chi, reading Chinese newspapers and literature, watching NBA games, and enjoying frequent visits by family. He remained very healthy and was always very sharp until the end when he passed away peacefully at home.
Sinh was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Lao Vuong De, and his 2 sons, Lam Cuong, and Lam Vinh. Sinh is survived by his children, Lâm Giốc and wife Trương Mai Trinh, Lâm Ký & wife Kou Shu-Chen, Lâm Hán and wife Phòng Y Mai, Lâm Ninh and husband Hà Quốc Huê, Lưu Cheau-Tsuey, wife of the late Cuong Lam, Lâm Mỹ Phương and husband Nguyễn Hùng, Lâm Lệ Trinh and husband Hứa Lâm, Lâm Tu-Vung wife of the late Lam Vinh, Lâm Yến Bình and husband Phạm Kim Ngôn, Lâm Hồng and wife Cao Li Chen, Lâm Phượng and husband Thái Trắc Hào, Lâm Đức Huy and wife Huỳnh Quan Phương, Lâm Tuyết and husband Trương Gia Tề and Lâm Lệ Lan. He also is survived by 27 grandchildren who all will forever carry on his memory and legacy in their hearts.
A private family memorial service will be held February 9th, 2021.
