Manfred was born October 1, 1941 in Hagen, Germany to Hermine (Groschopp) and Joseph Pertzborn. After completing his chef training in Switzerland, he was offered an opportunity to work in the U.S. In 1959 he arrived in San Francisco to work as a chef in Scheidel’s restaurant in the Sacramento area. Eventually he made his way back to the San Francisco Bay Area where he eventually met and married Lydia Rosa Fernandez on November 18, 1968. Manfred worked for many years in catering for the airlines and later at UC Berkeley’s International House where he enjoyed working with and meeting students from all over the world. In his free time, he loved to read, listen to music, trying new foods and restaurants, and spending time with family and friends.
Manfred is survived by his two daughters, Sylvia Pertzborn of Brooklyn, NY and Sandra Pertzborn of South San Francisco, CA. He was preceded in death by his wife Lydia Rosa Pertzborn (Fernandez) in 2017. He will be greatly missed.
