Avis Mittwede was born Avis Marie Schmidtke on May 16, 1935 in Nerstrand, Minnesota. After graduating from Northfield High School, she left farm life and worked as a dental assistant. She and a friend headed to find work in California, but ended up staying in Colorado Springs, CO. She met Army soldier Karl Mittwede there and married on June 30, 1956. They had two children, Richard in 1959 and Robin in 1960. Being an Army wife took her to El Paso, Virginia, and Japan, before settling in San Antonio and later New Braunfels.
Besides being a home maker, Avis worked part-time in various San Antonio and New Braunfels area school cafeterias and volunteered for several organizations. She was a devoted wife and mother who loved western and polka dancing. Avis was very much a people person who enjoyed being in touch with many friends. She loved writing letters, often created her own greeting cards, custom-made for each person using photos and magazine pictures.
She was fond of Mt Calvary Lutheran Church, and made sure her family was active in it. She made people laugh. She made people cringe. She is a child of God and is in His heavenly Kingdom now, probably dancing with Karl.
Avis is survived by her two children and daughter-in-law Marcia, two sisters, Geraldyne and Carol (Ben), nephews Jeff, Jody (Connie), Scott (Sue)and Brian and niece Lynn (Jim).
