Lydia Ramirez Hurtado, age 92 passed away in Austin TX on September 29, 2018 after a lengthy illness. Lydia was born in Pharr TX on October 30, 1925. She was raised by a loving father and four brothers after losing her mother at the young age of 6. Lydia attended PSJA High School and was an early member of the drill team The Bearettes. She met Noe J. Hurtado during her high school years. They married on January 4, 1943 and settled down in McAllen. They were blessed with nine children.
Lydia returned to school in the early 1960s to pursue her love of nursing and became an LVN. Her family was very proud of her strength and determination to accomplish this after having so many children. She was employed by Colonial Manor Nursing Home in her early days of nursing. She then spent the next two decades working at McAllen General Hospital and then McAllen Medical Center. Having a career outside of being a homemaker brought her great joy. She encouraged all her children to further their education but she especially encouraged her daughters to embrace their strength as women and to be resilient and independent.
Lydia is survived by eight of her children: Diana (Robert) Delgado, Igna (Ruben) Garza, Sally (Glenn) Hurtado-Kokemor, Noe (Licia) J. Hurtado Jr., Rene (Nora) Hurtado, Joel (Lydia) Hurtado, Sonia Fair, and James (Theresa) Hurtado. She has 18 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Lydia is preceded in death by her husband Noe J. Hurtado Sr., her precious son Javier Hurtado and her brothers Genaro, Adolfo, Bernardo, and Joe Ramirez.
