

Salvador Armando Jimenez was born in Laredo, Texas on June 5, 1920. He was preceded in death by his wife Hilda Maria Jimenez who died in June of 2006. They met in Saltillo, Mexico, after his separation from the US Army, married and move to San Antonio and spent 59 years together. He is survived by his sister Socorro Jimenez de Segura of Cancun, Mexico; daughters, Hilda Elisa Vargas Robert and daughter, Angelica Jimenez Urrabazo; granddaughters, Liana Vargas, Cecelia Alfaro Keith, Maricela Urrabazo, Claudia Urrabazo; great-grandsons, Gabriel Maldonado, Jr., Christian Vargas-Beltran, and Zachary and Vincent Alfaro; and, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his cousin, Adelina Nieto Flores Brig. General Belisario Flores, who he also considered a sister as they were raised by her parents, Jose and Estella Nieto in Eagle Pass, Texas. He grew up during the Great Depression and knew the value of his hard work and treasured his family and his home.
Salvador was in the US Army during World War II and spent his 24th birthday in a landing boat waiting for D-Day Allied offensive invasion at Normandy. He was awarded the Purple Heart having suffered a severe concussion from an exploding shell. Because of his heroic actions in leading two dozen soldiers in the rescue of a platoon trapped by enemy fire, he was also awarded two bronze stars; however, he did not receive these until 1994 almost 50 years later. He lost many friends during World War II and was very quiet about his memories of such a painful time.
He worked at the Express News Publishing Company for 36 years, retiring in l985. He worked in the Circulation Department, started with "just a route" and worked his way up to management positions. At his retirement, he was State Circulation Manager. One of his dreams was to travel, and he and his wife were fortunate to make several nice trips traveling through several US states with their neighbors the Zamora's and to San Miguel de Allende with his cousins, the Flores.' One of his favorite hobbies was woodworking.
