Phyllis A. Klaffenbach died on January 5, 2024 in Encinitas, California. She was the daughter of John D. and V. Gabriel Ayers of Scottsville, Kentucky. She met her husband John C. Klaffenbach, Sr. at the CIA in Washington D.C. where they both worked. They were married on December 26, 1955.
She was predeceased by her husband and three children, Carl J. Klaffenbach, Sr. Karen Klaffenbach, OSU, and Joel A. Klaffenbach. She was a homemaker and lived in Missouri most of her life. After her husband passed away in 1994, she devoted her time to taking care of her two sons, Carl who had Down Syndrome and Joel who suffered from mental illness. She was a very independent woman who enjoyed living on her 13 acres in Holts Summit, Mo. She would often bake for neighbors in exchange for plowing the snow from the gravel driveway, or letting another neighbor hunt deer in return for mowing the grass.
She is survived by three children, Lisa (Greg) Bosch, John C. (Denise) Klaffenbach, Jr., and David K. (Sandra) Klaffenbach, eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Patsy Faillace and Nancy Foltz.
She loved to read, especially history and archaeology, and was a needlewoman and excellent baker with bread her specialty. She was a strong supporter of women's rights and gender equality.
Services will be private. Memorial contributions to worthy charities are suggested in lieu of flowers.
