It is with great sadness that our family announces the death of Terry Gabrielle Kalfayan. Our loving wife, devoted mother, caring sister, affectionate colleague and friend passed away Sunday, May 19, 2019, at the age of 52. Terry was born on September 27, 1966 in San Diego to Robert and Josephine Schmidt. She was the youngest of their seven children.
Terry met her husband, George Kalfayan, while they were attending college at the University of San Diego (USD) from 1984-88. After graduating from USD, they got married in 1995 and had three beautiful children, Tess, Daniel, and Camryn. Terry enjoyed cooking, decorating and spending time with family and friends.
As a double alumna of USD (BA Business in Accountancy ‘88 and MS Business in Accountancy and Financial Management ‘05), Terry served as Controller, where she led financial reporting, tax compliance, and the development of the university’s financial framework. In 2007, she assumed the role of Assistant Vice President for Budget and Treasury. In 2013, Terry was appointed Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer where she led strategic financial efforts, oversaw key operational functions and managed the university’s endowment growth in support of its academic mission. She served with great dedication and success in this role until she passed away.
Prior to working at USD, Terry held management positions with Sharp Healthcare, and she began her career at Deloitte, an international public accounting and consulting firm. Terry shared her financial management skills and wise counsel as a volunteer for many organizations, including the County of San Diego Audit Committee and West Coast Conference Audit Committee, and most recently on the Catholic Charities, Diocese of San Diego, Finance Committee and the Academy of Our Lady of Peace Board of Directors.
Terry is survived by her husband, George, children, Tess, Daniel and Camryn, sisters, Joanne Stamper, Linda Carlton, Paula Seiberlich, Elaine Kammerer, Jeanne Schmidt, and Carolyn Vernon, brother/sister-in-laws, her nieces and nephews. She will be sorely missed, and remembered by her family and friends as a role model of humility and strength, compassion and love.
A Vigil Service and Rosary will be held on Thursday, May 23, at 7:00 p.m. and Funeral Mass on Friday, May 24, at 11:00 a.m., both of which will be held at the Church of The Immaculata on the University of San Diego campus, 5998 Alcalá Park, San Diego, CA 92110. A private Graveside Service for the immediate family is scheduled at 2:00 p.m.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Anthony’s Armenian Catholic San Diego Mission or USD Kalfayan Family Scholarship Fund c/o University of San Diego President's Office, 5998 Alcala Park HC222, San Diego, CA 92110.
