John H Baynes

July 26, 1924February 15, 2014

John Baynes died peacefully in his sleep at Cape Cod Senior Residences in Pocasset February 15, 2014. He was 89.

Born in Brockton, John was the son of the late Ernest and Florence (Kenney) Baynes. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Force where he served 30 missions in the European theatre in World War II as a top turret gunner on B-17 Flying Fortresses. He was in the 351 Bomber Group, 510th Bomber Squadron. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters for bravery and the Presidential Citation and was honorably discharged with the rank of Technical Sergeant.

John resided in Foxboro and worked at the Foxboro Company as a Quality Control Engineer for 30 years while raising his two children, Kenneth and Susan with his first wife, Barbara (Chisholm) Baynes (now deceased). He was a Boy Scout Troop leader and member of the Masons. He later remarried and retired to Sarasota, Florida where he enjoyed golfing, swimming, fishing and shuffleboard. He visited Cape Cod often. His grandchildren and their friends will remember “Grandpa John” from many camping weekends at Camp Lyndon in Sandwich as “Chief White Cloud” who anointed his “warriors” with given names by the camp fire. The last few years of his life John moved to Cape Cod and lived happily at Cape Cod Senior Residences in Pocasset.

He was preceded in death by his sisters Joan, Eileen and Pat and his brother, Kenneth. He is survived by his wife, Carol Baynes, son, Kenneth Baynes and his wife, Peggy, of Port Jefferson, NY and his daughter Susan (Baynes) Flagg and husband, Timothy, of Sandwich. He is also survived by his grandchildren Josh Flagg, Ben Flagg, Galen Baynes and Nora Baynes and his great-grandson, Isaak Dolmo Baynes.

A memorial for family and friends will be held in the spring on Cape Cod. John’s wishes were to have donations in his memory to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements under the direction of the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A, Sandwich.
