OBITUARY
Madeleine F. Delorey
December 22, 1943 – March 10, 2021
Madeleine Fidelia Delorey, 77, of Sandwich, MA passed away at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth, MA on March 10, 2021 of complications from Stage IV Breast Cancer which had metastasized to her brain. We are absolutely devastated to have lost her.
Madeleine was born to the late Anasie and Juliette Giard (Mathieu) on December 22, 1943 in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, Canada. The youngest of eight children, she grew up on her family’s dairy farm in Saint-Rosalie, Canada. At the age of 15 she moved to Scituate, MA for a summer to work as an au pair and stayed to study and learn English. She then graduated from Scituate High School and received her Associates Degree from Aquinas Collage in Milton, MA. She met Russell William Delorey of Weymouth, MA and they married on March 29, 1970 in Cohasset, MA. Together, they moved to Cape Cod and built a home and family in Sandwich, MA. Their son, Russell James, was born on September 28, 1977; and daughter, Suzanne Juliette, on May 5, 1981, both at Cape Cod Hospital.
Madeleine recently retired as Executive Director of the Barnstable County Bar Association where she greatly enjoyed her contribution to 31+ years of working with the court system, staff and attorneys.
Madeleine adored working on her gardens and spending time in her yard watching and feeding the birds. She loved reading a good book. Her and Russell spent many hours down by the Sandwich Marina watching the boats, birds and by-passers – they would bring snacks with them, get to-go from Seafood Sam’s or grab an ice-cream cone to enjoy. Madeline enjoyed time on the golf course very much. On trips her and Russell made, the golf clubs were always packed first. She was a member of the woman’s Nine & Dine at Holly Ridge Golf Course in Sandwich, where she would play every Wednesday afternoon with wonderful friends.
She is survived by her loving husband, Russell William Delorey, of 51 years of marriage. Her son, Russell James Delorey and wife Rayssa (Ribeiro) Delorey of Yarmouth. And her daughter Suzanne Juliette (Delorey) Lopez and husband Charles Lopez of East Bridgewater.
In addition to all of her loving friends, Madeleine is also survived by her siblings: her brother Pierre and his wife Martha Giard of Worcester; brother Gerard (and his late wife Celine) Giard of Quebec, Canada; brother, Jean-Charles and wife Micheline Giard of Montreal, Canada; her late brother Michele and his wife Nicole Giard of Saint-Sauveur, Canada; sister Carmen and husband Henri of Saint-Therese, Canada; sister Marie- Claire and her late husband Claude Allain of Saint-Therese, Canada and many nieces and nephews who were all cherished dearly.
Madeleine’s non-stop energy, incredible sense of humor and stubbornness will be greatly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 23rd from 4-7pm, at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A Sandwich, MA.

I was so saddened to learn of Madeleine's untimely passing given our long established professional friendship. I may very well have been her first or one of her first bosses @ BCBA as then President dating back to about 1988 -89. I knew immediately that what was a pretty disorganized back of the trunk run , albeit well intended , association would be infused with a bright new star filled with enthusiastic , upbeat energy ! She became the salvation of the organization particularly as administrative tasks became ever more complicated and detail oriented requiring full time management and office space . Madeleine rose to the challenge we awkwardly presented to her and she brought us to the heights of respect we enjoy today. Her warm , engaging and sunny disposition was always something I looked forward to encountering when attending Bar events ever since . A wonderful person all around that we were blessed for so many years to have leading our Bar. Sincerest, heartfelt condolences to the entire family especially Russell, Russell and Suzanne ...

It was the year 2000..July 1. Madeleine was a client of mine.. I did her manicures for her, when one day I had to suddenly leave for SF as my brother was in a hospital.
Madeleine offered to take my appt book and make all cancellations for the upcoming days. Upon my return, and knowing of my brothers passing... she stopped in my salon with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a chocolate chip cookie and a small container of milk. It was the most thoughtful and nurturing gesture and I have never forgotten her kindness and generosity in my time of need. This is who Madeleine was to all who were fortunate to know her... God grant peace to her husband, family and friends at this sad time.

That smile! The one constant in all her photos and all personal contact with Madeleine was her warm, sincere smile.
Although she had 2 biological children and husband who she all loved dearly and was so proud of (speaking of them all the time), she had hundreds of other "children" who were judges, attorneys, paralegals, legal support staff and members of the public desperately seeking legal representation. Forever gracious, charming and comforting, she served and supported ALL the best she could. I can never remember her ever having a bad day in any interaction with her. If you did not come away from dealing with her happier than when you started, then, the problem was on your end!
She represented the best the Barnstable County Bar had to offer always with grace and complete competence to complete any task asked of her. The Bar Association will miss her will miss her dearly both professionally and personally.
And I will miss that smile most of all.

No one, and I mean no one, was as important to the Barnstable County bar as Madeleine. Her commitment to the Cape’s lawyers, judges and courts, and her delightfully positive approach to her work with us all, has left a lasting mark. My condolences to her family. May memories of her bright smile and good humor comfort you in the days ahead. She was the best, and she will be missed.

Madeleine was the heart and soul of the Barnstable Bar Association for as long as I remember. She was a kind, gentle and loving person, always willing to help whenever asked to do so! I remember when I first became a lawyer in 1986 and started practicing law here, how helpful and supportive she and Kathleen Snow were to me. I know she helped hundreds of other lawyers, and judges in the same way. We will all miss her very much. My thoughts, prayers and condolences go out to Madeleine's family and friends.

Madeleine was a kind, caring, compassionate person. I first met Madeleine when I joined the Barnstable County Bar Association as a new Attorney. Madeleine was so welcoming. We later worked together when I was President of the Barnstable County Bar Association in 2007-2008. Most recently and for a number of years now, I was in regular contact with Madeleine as she always assisted us at the Barnstable Probate and Family Court with scheduling a Lawyer of the Day for some of our most vulnerable customers who could not afford a lawyer. I also enjoyed an occasional lunch with Madeleine and her dear friend, Attorney Kathleen Snow. We had a lot of laughs together. The Barnstable County Bar Association was more than just a job for her. She was the Barnstable County Bar Association! I will miss seeing my friend. My thoughts and prayers are with her husband Russell and her children.

Hello Russell,
There really are no words to express how wonderful Madeleine was and how much she will be missed. I always lived too far away to see enough of each of you, but in my heart she and Huguette were the two older and wiser sisters I always needed. Madeleine always made us feel like we were real family. She was wonderful to my parents. Her sense of humor fit right in. She always laughed and never judged. I will miss her calm, sensible, loving manner. Please give yourself and your “kids” a hug from me. Lots of love, Leslie

Suzi, Russ and Russ,
I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Madeleine was such a wonderful friend and neighbor to our family for so many years. Every time I stopped by with the kids she was always so welcoming and happy to see us. There are so many memories between our two families and she was such a huge part of our childhood and neighborhood growing up. I know she and my mom are watching over us all now.

We shall always remember the many good times we shared with Madeleine & Russell, and our other dear friends from Sandwich! And, our trip to the Montreal area, which ended with spending a couple of days and a wonderful dinner with her Canadian relatives! A great family! We wish the family (both near and far) well, as they grieve for Madeleine's loss, but know that she will be heralded by the good Lord above. Our tears and prayers be with her!
