Shirley Almand

Shirley Almand, 83, passed away peacefully after a short battle with brain cancer. She was married for 57 years to Bill Almand who preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughters and their husbands: Kitty & Dennis Flanagan, Suzie & Mike Gladle, and Joanna & Rich David. Shirley will be missed by her six loving grandchildren who enjoyed many great times at the beach, Boozer family reunions and at Big Canoe: Katie and Jennifer Flanagan, Drew (Meghan) and Tyler Gladle, and William and Nate David. Shirley was an active member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and graduated from UGA with a BS in Education. Shirley was an elementary school teacher and later a substitute teacher in various metro Atlanta schools. She was an avid gardener and participated in numerous garden clubs in Buckhead, Sandy Springs and Big Canoe. Shirley played in several ALTA tennis leagues and was elected to the ATLA Board of Directors and eventually became the ATLA Office Manager. Shirley remained an active volunteer for the Rabun Gap Nachoochee Guild of Atlanta, serving in various leadership positions. Raised in the Lutheran Church she also taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and participated in numerous Christian ministries at Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, Mount Vernon Baptist Church and Big Canoe Chapel. Funeral services with a reception after will be Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 10 o’clock at H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd., NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328 with Rev. R. Len Walker officiating. Memorial donations made be made to Rabun Gap Nachoochee Guild of Atlanta, Scholarship Fund, 399 Nachoochee Drive, Rabun Gap, GA 30568.
