Judith Witt Moore, of Flagler Beach Florida, passed away August 28, 2021. She was born in Queens, New York, and grew up in North Miami, Florida. Her parents, William Witt and Olive Sophia Proulx owned a delicatessen on the island of Surfside, where Judy worked in the summers, along with her brother Bill Witt.
Judith attended college at Stetson University in Deland, Fl where she met her husband, William Arnold Moore. They were married on November 3, 1962. They were both education majors and shared a love of teaching and working with young people. Judy earned a Bachelor of Art degree in Elementary Education in 1967, and a Master’s degree in Reading Education from Rollins College in Winter Park, FL. She was an active member in both Kappa Delta Phi and Phi Delta Kappa.
Judy started teaching 1st grade at Enterprise Elementary in Debary, FL in 1967. After this first year, Bill and Judy moved to Fort Meyers for a brief period where Judy focused on raising their three daughters, Laura, Bonnie and Carol Lynn.
Judy resumed her teaching career in Seminole County, Florida at Pinecrest Elementary in 1970. She then went on to teach at English Estates Elementary, Red Bug Elementary, and Keeth Elementary before retiring in 1994. She cared very much for the education of young minds and was involved in education in many ways.
She excelled at teaching students to write, and provided professional development to teachers in Seminole County, along with developing writing curriculum. She was actively involved with the Seminole Education Association and served on the board of directors and advocated for educators at the state and national level by participating in conventions for both the Florida Education Association and the National Education Association. One of her proudest moments as an educator was being invited to serve as part of the investigative team for the Florida Accountability Program. In addition to these activities, Judy enjoyed supporting her husband Bill with his work with the Lake Mary High School girls’ basketball team and AAU basketball.
Judy was a loving mother to her three girls and enjoyed taking them shopping, sharing with them her love for reading, and supporting their extra-curricular activities. She was a lifelong member of the National Audubon Society and loved spotting new birds around Florida. She loved to garden and grew beautiful roses and African violets. Judy also loved spending time fishing with her husband Bill.
One of Judy’s favorite roles was as a loving grandmother to her three amazing grandchildren, Jordynn, Will and Kacie. She loved spending time with them teaching them their letters and numbers, swimming in the pool, and doing fun crafts. Also, she spent countless hours attending horse-back riding lessons and horse shows, always being a positive influence on these three special people. Judy was an artist and let her light shine through her beautiful work. She enjoyed sharing her love of art with her grandchildren and taught them that you can express yourself through art.
Service for Judith Witt Moore will be held at Baldwin-Fairchild Oaklawn Chapel, 5000 County Road 46A Sanford, FL on Tuesday, November 9th. Visitation will be 5pm-5:30pm with a service beginning at 5:30pm. Judy was a strong woman who was able to be with us for the last 18 years of her life because of a lifesaving pancreas and kidney transplant. Her family will be forever grateful for the time this gave them to have her in their lives. In lieu of flowers please make a charitable donation to the Miami Transplant and Education Fund:
