Barbara Jean Derbyshire
July 24, 1930 – December 11, 2018
Barbara “Jean” Derbyshire a long-time resident of Santa Paula, died peacefully in her sleep Tuesday, the 11th of December at Ventura Grand Chateau Assisted Living facility. Born July 24, 1930 at her parent’s home in Los Angeles California. Jean lived for a short time in Oklahoma on a farm during the Great Depression, but lived the majority of her life in Santa Paula CA. She graduated from Santa Paula High School in 1948, and moved to Los Angeles where she attended nursing school at County USC Medical Center and received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Education. After graduation she returned to Santa Paula where she married and raised four children while continuing to work as a nurse. She continually worked as a Labor and Delivery Nurse at, County General Hospital, now known as Ventura County Medical Center, for over thirty years.
Following her retirement in the mid 1980’s she became a volunteer for Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurses Association, where she received the Roy Carlson Volunteer of the Year award for her outstanding service. She loved doing crafts and was a long-time member and volunteer at the Seniors Craft Shoppe in downtown Ventura. Jean loved watching sports, especially her Los Angeles Dodgers. She enjoyed good food, wine, traveling, swimming, tennis, going to concerts, listening to her favorite opera singer Mario Lanza, and has always been an avid reader.
She was proceeded in death by her parents Eva & Floyd Young, her brother Donald Young, and her husband of over 50 years Graham Derbyshire. She is survived by her four children, Laura Riggs (Lloyd), Ron Derbyshire, Linda Derbyshire, and John Derbyshire, five grandchildren Dyanna & Damon Riggs, Jessica Crafton & Brittany Derbyshire and Angelia Ferguson, and four great grandchildren, all of whom brought great joy to her in her later years. Memorial services will be held with a Graveside on Friday 28th of December at 10:00am at Pierce Brothers Santa Paula Cemetery located at, 380 Cemetery Road Santa Paula, California, 93060 805-525-5258
