Mallory Devine Goewey passed away peacefully on April 7, 2021, after a brief illness. A loving wife, arts enthusiast, animal lover and compassionate community volunteer, Mallory lived an active and happy life with her devoted husband, Richard, in Sarasota, Florida, and summered together near Blowing Rock, North Carolina.
In addition to her husband, Richard, Mallory is survived by her brothers Rodney Devine and Ian Devine; her nieces and nephew, Lydia, Andrew and Meredith Devine; her grand-nephew, Theo Garcia; and her cousins, Cordier, Mary Haven, William and Deirdre MacGuire. Mallory was the eldest child of Louise Williams Devine and C. Robert Devine of New York City.
Born on May 21, 1946, Mallory embraced life to the fullest. At age 6, she developed scoliosis – curvature of the spine – which shaped her outward appearance. But Mallory did not let her physical condition define her life, which was marked by a desire to continue to learn, explore the world, and build the communities she was part of.
She attended Palm Beach Day School and earned a degree in education from Boston University. Mallory’s positive attitude made her a natural for a career in banking with a focus on customer service.
Her peripatetic nature led her to live and work from Boston to Boca Raton, Houston to Hartford, Lenox (MA) to Prosperity (SC), before retiring with Richard to Sarasota. The happiest years of Mallory’s life began with her marriage to Richard in 2011. Always ready for a long walk or an overseas adventure, they traveled together throughout Europe, around the Caribbean, to Australia and New Zealand. Beyond the sights, among Mallory’s favorite part of travel was the chance to interact with people from across the globe who shared her love of the world and desire for meaningful connection with others.
Throughout her life, Mallory always made time to give back. She volunteered as a teacher’s assistant in several elementary schools and enjoyed reading to young children. She was also a volunteer at Tanglewood, summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, greeting patrons with the same contagious enthusiasm she herself devoted to the arts, from opera to community theater.
Mallory’s faith was an essential part of her life. She was an active member of Episcopal churches wherever she lived -- most recently, St. Mary in the Hills in Blowing Rock, NC, and the Church of the Redeemer in Sarasota. Her lifelong, quiet philanthropy helped to sustain and grow these churches and other charitable organizations.
A memorial service will be held June 26 at the Church of the Redeemer in Sarasota.
