Raul Boeras

September 11, 1934May 17, 2020

Raul Boeras was born on September 11, 1934, to Rafael and Ana Luisa Boeras in Niquero, Cuba. He was one of five children, Aquino, Aleida, Rosendo and Arnaldo.

Raul was dedicated to his family from his early years through his last day on earth. He went to work at the age of ten selling ice cream from a pushcart and brought home his small earnings to his parents to help with expenses. He met the love of his life, Bertha, in 1952 in Cuba. They eloped on Christmas Eve in 1954 and had a child, Aracely, in 1956. Raul and Bertha were aware of Castro’s impending hostile takeover of Cuba and were luckily able to leave legally in April of 1958.

Raul worked at the Plaza Restaurant for ten years and had a second job as a bus driver for St. Martha’s School and Cardinal Mooney High School. He saved his hard earned money and together with his wife Bertha, fulfilled the American dream of owning his own business, Raul’s Restaurant for 30 years in downtown Sarasota. Raul and Bertha came to know many people through the years. They helped many family members come to the United States. Raul was dedicated to his parents and siblings, visiting them daily. He loved his children, Aracely, Raul Jr. (Rico), and Vivian, and taught them many valuable lessons. He taught them the value of a dollar, the honor of being a hard worker and contributing to the community, to put your family first above all else, to dance, to sing and to laugh. Those lessons have been passed down to his grandchildren, Jason, Andrew, Danielle, Jenna, Jack, Jordan and his great grandchild Emilia.

Raul left us on May 17, 2020, surrounded by his family. Although we weren’t able to physically hold him in his last moments, he heard us all and he knew he was loved.

There will be a graveside service on Thursday, May 21, 2020, at 10 a.m. for close family due to the pandemic. If you would like to join us via Facebook livestream go to the Facebook page Robert Toale and Sons Funeral Home at Palms Memorial Park.

I first met Raul at Mark and Cely's wedding. He was so full of life, dancing all over the place, so full of joy. That's how I will remember this wonderful man. Over the years, as I got to know him a little better, I got to know his sense of humor and the way he looked at the world. I will never forget him. Much love and many condolences to Bertha, Cely, Vivian and Rico and the rest of the family in this very sad time,.
