Rebecca Zimmerman Christman passed away at home on Sunday, January 27, 2013, after a long and courageous struggle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Dr. James C. Christman, her daughter, Emily Christman Szymanski, wife of Michael of Elizabethtown, her son, Joel Zimmerman Christman, husband of Gillian of Newark, DE, and 4 grandchildren. In addition, she also leaves four siblings: Emma Beth (Betsy) Nolt, wife of Tom, of Schaefferstown; Franklin D. Zimmerman, (Spike) III, husband of Cindy; John M. Zimmerman of Newmanstown; and Clayton S. Zimmerman (Snap), husband of Laurie, of Myerstown.
Mrs. Christman was born in Lancaster on September 23, 1946, to the late Dr. Franklin D. Zimmerman, Jr., and Kathryn Overly Zimmerman of Schaefferstown. She graduated from Eastern Lebanon County High School in 1964, and although she went to college for merchandising and worked as a licensed beautician for several years, she excelled at being a full-time homemaker and mother and was renowned for her pies and delicious soups, as well as her keen decorating ability. Her life truly centered around her family and friends, and she was beloved by all. An avid Hershey Bears fan, she was a season ticket holder for many years, and was a former member of both the Chambersburg and Lebanon Medical Auxiliaries. Before moving from Chambersburg to Lebanon, she was active in the Chambersburg Garden Club. In addition, she enjoyed collecting shells from the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and she particularly loved all animals, both wild and tame, and had a succession of pets throughout her life, from horses to cats.
She belonged to St. Luke Lutheran Church in Schaefferstown, where she was the associate director of the junior choir, a member of church council for 12 years, and a very popular cook for the Lenten Soup suppers. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends, and her grace and faith will continue to serve as an inspiration for all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Schaefferstown, on Saturday, February 2, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in the memory of Rebecca Christman to St. Luke Lutheran Church, PO Box 278, Schaefferstown, PA 17088, and to the Lebanon County Humane Society, 150 N. Ramona Rd., Myerstown, PA 17067.
