Dorothea, the only child of John and Lydia (Rushton) MacDougall, was born in Oxford, Nova Scotia on May 30, 1923 and graduated from Weymouth High School in 1941. She married Robert F. Smith (Lt. Col. U.S. Army, Ret.) in 1946, and together they were successful builders and developers on the South Shore as Braemar Homes. Horses were also their passion. Dorothea and Bob bred and raced horses in Florida, New England, New York and Maryland for many years. They also owned and operated the Jessie MacDougall Nursing Home in Scituate from 1966 until 1976.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Dorothea’s nurses and caregivers who allowed her to remain in her home. Special thanks to Alina Rivera who cared for Dorothea for eight years.
Dorothea is pre-deceased by her husband Bob; sisters and brothers-in-law Dorothy and Jim Bartlett; Warren and Lydia Smith; David and Terry Smith; Eugene and Barbara Smith; and niece Dorothy Bartlett. She is survived by many nieces and nephews: Lydia, Warren, Brian and Bruce Smith; David and Alan Smith and Karen Morena; Robert Bartlett; Barbara, George, Robert and Eugene Smith, Sue Schmalz and Sandy MacDonald. Dorothea is also survived by her longtime friend and attorney, Kenneth Goodman, and her dear and devoted friend, Zoe Bongarzone.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m., November the 7th, at Richardson Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd. Scituate, MA, with a Funeral Service at 11 a.m., followed by interment at Fairview Cemetery in Scituate.
