Mom was 96 years old when she passed away. She was always so healthy and strong that we all thought she would live to be 100. She was the first born of five children and survived all but the youngest of them. But length of life and out surviving siblings is not the true wonder of her life. She was raised on a farm during the depression years and learned early how to live frugally and how to sacrifice. Attributes that she exemplified her entire life. She married when she was 19 because the man she loved was about to be drafted for service in WWII. A year later she birthed the first of six children. At 25, after the birth of the third child she suffered a serious depression that resulted in her being hospitalized. Her illness impacted her life but did not stop her from unselfishly raising her family and supporting her husband. She birthed three more children and made the most of every dollar to feed, cloth, and care for her children, taking very little for herself.
Mom shared her home with so many over the years allowing them to live with her when they couldn't afford to live on their own. An amazing gift particularly because she was such an introverted person. She was a lovely pianist and served for many years as church organist. She also wrote scripts and music, and directed amateur plays for church production. She taught church classes and served with Dad in the temple for many years.
As she and Dad aged, he didn't hold up as well as she did and as a result she became his care giver. It was truly amazing to watch her tiny 5'1" frame pull his 5'11" body up from a sitting position to standing. Her devotion to him was incredible and inspiring. After Dad died she lived five more years without him. She read books, did picture puzzles and crossword puzzles and endured her remaining years patiently waiting for him to come get her. He finally did. May they both rejoice in their reunion.
