She was born Loraine Lillian Pennington on July 31, 1920, in Halliday, North Dakota, the fifth of seven children of Austin Blanchard Pennington and Laura Mary Pennington (Schafer). Her family moved to Seattle when she was 2, settling first in South Park. Loraine was active in swimming and tennis, and she switched high schools so she could play tennis at Highline High. She remained active for nearly all of her life, enjoying swimming, hiking, gardening and travel. Loraine and husband Don spent many years and many miles covering the trails of Lincoln Park.
Around her high school years, Loraine met Donald Herbert Moe, a fellow West Seattle resident who happened to be going out with one of her friends. Don joined the Navy in the late 1930s, and when he came home from the service, his former girlfriend was married, and Loraine was determined that she and Don would be together. And they were, for the next 60 years. Loraine and Don spent most of their lives in West Seattle, raising three children. Loraine worked in secretarial jobs from the 1950s to the 1970s, including several years at Bethlehem Steel and Alaska Airlines — where she worked for the chief pilot — and for a doctors group in downtown Seattle.
Don passed away in 2004, while the couple was living in Bellevue, and Loraine remained there for several years in an apartment adjacent to granddaughter Debbie’s home. For most of the past 10 years, Loraine lived on her own in an apartment at Boulevard Park Place, where she enjoyed socializing, feeding the hummingbirds and driving over to see Donna and Denny. She was a regular at BPP’s ice cream socials and beanbag baseball games, and she could always be counted on to join the betting pools on Mariners and Seahawks games.
Loraine outlived her siblings by many years. Her family included brothers Ted, Eddie, Don and Walt, and sisters Mabel and Gladys. Husband Don also had six siblings, so family gatherings were filled with cousins, grandchildren and in-laws of all sorts.
Loraine is survived by three children: daughter Donna and sons Michael and Brian; 11 grandchildren: Douglas Lockett, Debbie Stevens, Deanna Krempl, Jaimie Shenaman, Laurin Bodwell, Kyle Moe, Dylan Moe, Tara Crozat, Amy Reilly, Zoe Verdier and Molly Conrad; 13 great-grandchildren: Derek, Desirae, Laura, Jake, Katelyn, Stephen, Anthony, Austin, Tommy, Ryan, Lilly, Liam and Amelia; and two great-great-grandchildren: Delilah and Quinn.
Burial will be at Riverton Crest Cemetery in Tukwila. Loraine encouraged donations to a favorite charity in lieu of flowers.
